A strong 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit central and southern Mexico on Tuesday, in what witnesses described as "long" and "strong", sending objects tumbling from shelves, cracking walls and emptying buildings of millions of frightened residents fleeing to the streets, damaging some 800 homes near the epicenter, with another 60 having collapsed and swaying tall buildings and spreading fear and panic hundreds of miles away in the capital of Mexico City.
"There was earth and smoke coming from below the ground, even the tallest of the buildings in Reforma Avenue were swaying wildly from side to side and windows were crashing around us," said Maria Gonzalez, a worker who was at the city' financial district next to the Mexican Stock Exchange when the quake happened.
Built on a lake bed, Mexico City was badly damaged in 1985 when an 8.1 earthquake killed at least 10,000 people. In past years, Guerrero has suffered several severe earthquakes, including a 7.9 in 1957 which killed an estimated 68 people and a 7.4 in 1995 which left three dead. There have been 15 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or stronger since 1973 within 310 miles (500 kilometers) of Tuesday's quake. Weaker buildings collapse with each quake, leaving a tragic scene.
